Britney Spears Avoids Jail Time with 'Wet Reckless' Plea Following Ventura County DUI Arrest

VENTURA COUNTY, CA — Pop superstar Britney Spears has officially resolved her recent legal troubles in Ventura County. In a hearing yesterday afternoon, the 44-year-old singer pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving—commonly referred to in California as a "wet reckless"—as part of a plea agreement to resolve a misdemeanor DUI charge.

Spears was represented in court by her attorney, Michael A. Goldstein, and was not required to attend the proceedings personally. The charge stems from an incident on March 4, 2026, when California Highway Patrol officers stopped Spears on the southbound 101 Freeway after reports of a vehicle driving quickly and erratically. Officers at the scene noted that Spears appeared impaired, and she was taken into custody after a series of field sobriety tests.

The Path to Rehabilitation

Under the terms of the deal, Spears has been sentenced to 12 months of summary probation. The court also ordered her to complete a mandatory 30-hour first-offender DUI program and pay state-mandated fines and fees. A key component of the plea includes the singer’s continued commitment to mental health and substance abuse treatment, which includes twice-monthly visits with a psychiatrist and weekly sessions with a psychologist.

District Attorney Erik Nasarenko noted that the plea offer is a standard resolution for first-time offenders who show a high motivation to address underlying issues. Spears had voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation facility last month, a move that the DA’s office acknowledged as a positive step toward taking "full responsibility" for the offense.

Conditions of Probation

As part of the summary probation, Spears must yield her Fourth Amendment search and seizure rights if pulled over by law enforcement, meaning she must submit to chemical sobriety tests and vehicle searches upon request. Nasarenko emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, "We do not want Ms. Spears to reoffend. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a serious crime that endangers everyone on our roads."

Attorney Michael Goldstein expressed that while no one is happy to plead guilty, the result allows Spears to put the incident behind her and continue focusing on her personal health and recovery.
