Hope Becomes Reality: Special Guests Get First Look Inside Chicago’s Obama Presidential Center Ahead of Summer Opening
CHICAGO, IL — A decade after President Barack Obama first announced Jackson Park as the future home of his presidential center, the vision is nearing its completion. On Monday, a select group of visitors, including scholars and former administration officials, were granted an exclusive first look inside the Obama Presidential Center (OPC) ahead of its highly anticipated grand opening next month.
The 19.3-acre campus is designed to be more than a repository for history; it is a sprawling community hub that includes a museum, a public library branch, and a dedicated athletics center. While the public has watched the Museum Tower rise above the South Side for years, this week marked the first time the interior spaces were filled with the people the center was built to serve.
Inside the Museum and Forum
Though cameras were not permitted inside the galleries during the preview, visitors emerged describing an emotional and immersive experience. The tour highlighted several key architectural features:
The Museum Tower: An eight-story structure designed to represent "four hands coming together." It will house exhibits detailing the Obama presidency and a full-size replica of the Oval Office.
The Hadiya Pendleton Atrium: Located within the Forum building, this bright, sun-drenched space is named in honor of the 15-year-old Chicago teenager who was killed by gun violence just days after performing at the 2013 inauguration. The atrium features commissioned artwork from Chicago artist Theaster Gates.
The Forum Building: This community-focused wing also houses the Elie Wiesel Auditorium and a recording studio for young creators.
A Legacy of Hope
Among the first visitors was Arne Duncan, the former U.S. Secretary of Education, who described the experience as "beyond any expectations." He noted that the center aims to capture the spirit of individual civic action. "We were really honest about creating hope and about what all of us can do as individuals," Duncan said.
For local neighbors, the project represents a significant investment in the South Side. Resident Ruth Laster shared her excitement for the neighborhood's future, stating, "I think it's going to be beneficial to the neighborhood. Improvement, you know."
Grand Opening and Ticketing
The Obama Presidential Center is scheduled to officially open to the public on June 19, 2026—a date chosen to coincide with Juneteenth celebrations.
General admission tickets are set to go on sale to the public on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Pricing: Tickets for non-Illinois residents are $30 for adults, while Illinois residents receive a discounted rate of $26.
Community Access: In a commitment to local accessibility, the museum will be free for Illinois residents every Tuesday. Additionally, more than half of the OPC campus, including the park, gardens, and playground, will remain free and open to the public year-round.
The center is expected to generate an economic impact of over $3 billion and draw roughly 700,000 annual visitors to the South Side of Chicago.
