New Coachella Mayor Vows to Rebuild Community Trust
Less than two weeks into his tenure, Coachella Mayor Dr. Frank Figueroa is already facing pressing questions from residents about the city’s direction and leadership. In an interview, Figueroa shared that his role is about more than holding office — it’s about restoring confidence in a community shaken by recent events.
For Figueroa, serving as mayor is deeply personal. The son of farmworkers, he says his roots trace back to the very fields that surround Coachella. That connection, he explains, has shaped both his perspective and his commitment to the city.
His interest in public service began early. Growing up, Figueroa followed local headlines closely and regularly attended city council meetings, experiences that fueled his desire to one day serve his community.
Now, he steps into leadership at a critical moment. Figueroa assumes the role following the resignation of former mayor Steven Hernandez, who pleaded guilty to a felony conflict-of-interest charge — a development that left many residents questioning the integrity of city leadership.
Figueroa acknowledges the challenges ahead but says his focus is clear: turning the page and rebuilding trust. He emphasizes that restoring confidence in local government will require transparency, accountability, and consistent engagement with residents.
Among his priorities are improving public spaces, enhancing parks, and creating more family-friendly environments — efforts he believes will help residents feel a renewed sense of pride in their city.
As part of his outreach, Figueroa plans to host a “Coffee with the Mayor” event at Sixth Street Coffee in the coming weeks. The gathering is intended to open lines of communication and give residents a chance to share their concerns directly.
Figueroa says rebuilding trust won’t happen overnight, but he hopes to move the city forward one conversation at a time.
