Palm Springs Fire Department Launches Annual Brush Removal Program Ahead of Fire Season

As temperatures begin to rise across the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Fire Department is launching its annual wildfire mitigation and brush removal program.

The effort began Tuesday at the Palm Springs Visitor Information Center, marking the start of a two-month operation aimed at reducing fire danger ahead of peak wildfire season.

Each year, city crews clear more than 100 acres of dry brush and vegetation across 14 city-owned vacant lots, focusing on areas most vulnerable to fast-moving wildfires.

Officials say recent spring rainfall contributed to increased vegetation growth, but rising temperatures and dry conditions quickly turn that growth into wildfire fuel. With expected Santa Ana winds, fire danger can escalate rapidly.

Fire officials warn that wind-driven fires can spread quickly and become difficult to control, especially in neighborhoods without proper defensible space. They emphasize the importance of vegetation management after seeing how quickly brush fires can grow into large-scale emergencies in California.

Residents are also being urged to take action by clearing brush around their homes and maintaining defensible space.

Fire officials say wildfire prevention is a community responsibility.

“This is a call to action,” officials said. “It only takes a few properties not doing their part to create a hazard for an entire neighborhood.”

The brush removal program will continue through July 1.
