'Same Symbol, Same Message': Austin Church Targeted by Repeat Vandalism on Inclusive Mural
AUSTIN, TX — A South Austin congregation is facing a familiar challenge this week after their inclusive message of "Faith, Hope, and Love" was once again obscured by targeted vandalism. This past weekend, Life in the City United Methodist Church discovered that a significant portion of their exterior mural had been defaced with spray paint—the second such incident in less than a year.
A Repeated Offense
The graffiti, which appeared over the weekend, bears a striking resemblance to an act of vandalism the church experienced just nine months ago. Crystal Paull, the Artistic Director for the congregation, noted that the symbols used in this latest incident were essentially identical to the previous attack.
"It was surprising to see the exact same message essentially with the same symbol spray-painted," Paull said. "You know, it could be that it's the same person. We don't know."
Investigation and Community Reaction
The incident has been reported to the Austin Police Department, and church officials are currently reviewing security camera footage in hopes of identifying the individual or individuals responsible.
Local neighbors expressed disappointment at the repeated targeting of the church, which is known in the community for its inclusive and welcoming stance. Sara Boston, a resident in the neighborhood, described the message left behind by the vandals as "disappointing" and out of step with the peace the congregation tries to cultivate.
Restoration and Forgiveness
Despite the frustration of dealing with a repeat crime, the congregation at Life in the City is choosing a path of resilience. Members describe the church as a "place of peace" and say they are willing to overlook the petty nature of the crime in favor of moving forward.
"This is a place of peace—so they're willing to overlook this petty crime," the congregation shared in a statement. Volunteers and church members plan to begin work on the mural immediately, with the goal of restoring the damaged section within the week.
