Chaos Erupts in Sacramento Courtroom During Knife Threat Suspect’s Arraignment
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A tense scene unfolded inside a Sacramento courtroom Monday as Brian Mattson, a 56-year-old man accused of making threatening motions with a knife, disrupted his own arraignment by shouting and cursing at the judge.
The outburst came after a lengthy delay, with proceedings held up for nearly two hours before Mattson was brought into the courtroom. Once inside, he repeatedly demanded to know the charges against him and asked for paperwork, prompting a chaotic atmosphere.
Mattson was first spotted Thursday night on Ring camera footage in the Arden Park neighborhood, where he was seen making repeated stabbing motions with a knife outside several homes. While no one was physically harmed, the incident left residents shaken and concerned about public safety.
Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office initially arrested Mattson Saturday morning on a trespassing charge. Officials attempted to place a probation violation hold, as Mattson is already on felony probation, but that request was denied. He was released within hours.
Later the same day, deputies responded to another trespassing call involving Mattson less than half a mile from the original incident. This time, a probation hold was approved, and he was taken back into custody.
During Monday’s hearing, a judge revoked Mattson’s probation, keeping him behind bars as the case moves forward.
Neighbors say the situation has prompted discussions about strengthening community safety, including the possibility of forming a neighborhood watch group.
Mattson is scheduled to return to court on May 12.
