Coachella Valley Firebirds Force Game 5 with Dominant 6-2 Win Over Ontario Reign

PALM DESERT, CA — With their season on the line, the Coachella Valley Firebirds rose to the occasion Thursday night, dismantling the Ontario Reign 6-2 in front of a raucous home crowd at Acrisure Arena. The victory evens the best-of-five Pacific Division Semifinals at two games apiece, setting the stage for a dramatic, winner-take-all Game 5 this weekend.
Despite a shaky start that saw the Reign take an early 1-0 lead in the first period, the Firebirds’ special teams proved to be the difference-maker.
Special Teams and Rookie Milestones
The Firebirds' power play, which had struggled at points during the series, finally broke through when J.R. Avon found the back of the net to tie the game. In the second period, Mitchell Stephens buried a clutch goal to give Coachella Valley a lead they would never surrender.
Perhaps the most significant spark of the night came from rookie defenseman Kaden Hammell, who extended the lead with his first career AHL postseason goal. The insurance kept coming in the third period as Lleyton Roed made it 4-1. While Ontario managed to pull within two late in the frame, the Firebirds extinguished any hope of a comeback with two empty-net goals from Jagger Firkus and Oscar Fisker Mølgaard just 17 seconds apart.
By The Numbers
Goaltending: Nikke Kokko stood tall under pressure, turning away 26 of 28 shots to earn the win.
Special Teams: CV went 1-for-4 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Shot Count: The Firebirds outshot the Reign 33-28, maintaining offensive pressure throughout the final two periods.
The Three Stars of the Game
Kaden Hammell (CV): The rookie blue-liner had a night to remember, recording a goal and an assist to lead the charge.
Mitchell Stephens (CV): His second-period go-ahead goal served as the emotional turning point for the squad.
Oscar Fisker Mølgaard (CV): With a goal and an assist, Fisker Mølgaard remains the Firebirds' postseason points leader (9 points).
Saturday Night Showdown
The series now shifts back to the Inland Empire. The Firebirds will travel to the Toyota Arena in Ontario for Game 5. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT this Saturday, May 9, with the winner advancing to the Pacific Division Finals.
