Google Health App Will Soon Welcome Apple Watch Users as AI Race Intensifies

Google wants to be your primary fitness coach and wellness adviser, even if you prefer an Apple Watch over a Pixel. On Thursday, May 7, 2026, the technology giant announced a series of massive health updates that place its generative AI coach at the center of its consumer strategy. The move signals a shift from trying to win the "smartwatch wars" to dominating the "AI health race" against rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft.

Expanding beyond its own Fitbit and Pixel hardware is the core of this new bet. Google is wagering that its sophisticated AI health assistant, launching in the rebranded Google Health app on May 19, will be enough of a draw to lure users away from the native apps of Apple, Oura, and Garmin.

The New AI Health Coach and Fitbit Air

The centerpiece of the update is the Google Health Coach, an interface powered by Google’s Gemini models. Starting later this month, the app will offer personalized summaries of medical records, tailored weekly fitness plans, and a conversational chatbot that can answer nuanced questions about a user's biometric data.

Accompanying the app is a new piece of hardware called the Fitbit Air. This screenless, ultra-lightweight wristband is designed for users who want to track their vitals without the constant distraction of notifications.

The coach is designed to notice subtle trends that a human might miss. For instance, it can flag how a specific run contributed to a long-term cardio goal or notice that a user’s heart rate variability improved after a few nights of extra sleep. While a preview has been available since October, the full version will now act as a comprehensive "team of experts" for the average consumer.

Strategy of Open Collaboration

Google currently trails Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei in global wearable market share. According to recent data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple still captures roughly 60 percent of all smartwatch revenue. Rather than fighting for unit sales alone, Google is opening its ecosystem.

Rishi Chandra, Vice President and General Manager for Google Health, confirmed that the ultimate goal is for the AI coach to work with data imported from Apple’s HealthKit and Android’s Health Connect.

"People love their Apple Watch, and that's great," Chandra said. "We want to meet users where they are. Let’s go work with you."

Support for the Apple Watch and other third-party devices is expected to roll out later this year, making Google's AI insights available to millions who do not own a Google device.

Risks and Competition in a Crowded Field

The race to provide AI-driven health advice is becoming increasingly crowded. In March 2026, Microsoft launched Copilot Health, which analyzes medical records to spot long-term trends. Meanwhile, OpenAI reported that 1 in 4 of its 800 million regular users now submit a healthcare-related prompt every week.

However, the medical community remains cautious. Institutions like the Mayo Clinic and the Duke University School of Medicine have warned that generative AI can "hallucinate" or provide inaccurate information. They argue that these tools lack the contextual reasoning of a trained medical professional.

In response, Google has implemented a safety framework called SHARP and maintains that its coach is not designed to diagnose conditions or replace doctors. Despite the risks, the demand is clear: a West Health-Gallup survey from April 2026 found that approximately 66 million Americans now consult AI for health advice, often as a supplement to their professional medical visits.

As Google prepares for the May 19 rollout, the tech industry will be watching to see if "playing nice" with rivals is the winning formula for the future of personal wellness.
