IID Advances $36.7 Million Grid Modernization Project for Desert Communities
The Imperial Irrigation District is moving ahead with a $36.7 million grid modernization project designed to improve electric reliability for customers across the Coachella and Imperial valleys.
IID officials say the upgraded system will combine core grid operations into a single advanced platform, allowing crews to respond more quickly to outages and better manage increasing energy demand across the region.
The utility says the modernization effort is especially important as desert communities continue facing extreme summer heat and growing pressure on the electrical grid. Officials believe the improvements will strengthen reliability and improve overall system efficiency during peak usage periods.
The project also received a major federal investment totaling $18.3 million. According to IID, the funding support was backed during the Donald Trump administration.
Utility leaders say the investment represents a significant step toward modernizing infrastructure and preparing the region’s power system for future growth and climate-related challenges.
