IID Moves Forward with Power Grid Upgrade After Securing $18.3 Million in Federal Funding

The Imperial Irrigation District is moving forward with a $36.7 million power grid upgrade after the Trump Administration approved $18.3 million in federal funding. IID will cover the remaining $18.4 million.

According to IID, the money will fund a new system that connects utilities' grid operations into one real-time platform, making it easier to spot problems and restore power faster when outages happen. For a region that regularly sees extreme heat, the district says that kind of response time matters.

The project was submitted for federal approval in 2024 and has been under review since. IID expects the upgrade to reduce how often outages happen and how long they last for its 165,000-plus customers across the two valleys.

No timeline for completion was announced.
