Inmate Hospitalized After Alleged Assault at Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility

An inmate at Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility is in critical condition following an alleged assault inside the jail.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded just after midnight Tuesday after reports of an assault inside a cell.

Officials say deputies intervened and stopped the attack. The victim was then taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 55-year-old Artemio Gonzalez.

Gonzalez remains in custody as investigators continue to look into what led up to the assault.
