Surviving "Deep Water": Manny the Movie Guy Dives In with Gene Simmons and Renny Harlin

In a recent exclusive interview, Manny the Movie Guy sat down with the powerhouse duo behind the new survival thriller Deep Water: legendary director Renny Harlin and rock icon-turned-producer Gene Simmons. The film, which recently opened in theaters, marks a return to high-stakes aquatic horror for Harlin, nearly 30 years after his cult classic Deep Blue Sea.

A Disaster Movie with a Human Heart

While the film’s premise—a plane crash at 30,000 feet followed by a desperate struggle against a shark frenzy—sounds like pure spectacle, Harlin told Manny that the emotional core is what truly matters. Inspired by 1970s disaster epics like The Poseidon Adventure, Harlin aimed to create characters audiences would genuinely care for before the chaos begins.

Gene Simmons, who launched his new company Simmons/Hamilton Productions with this project, echoed this sentiment. He emphasized that the film "rings all the bells," offering a shared theatrical experience that evokes laughter, tears, and raw terror.

Practical Stunts and "Old-School" Realism

One of the most discussed segments of the interview was Harlin’s commitment to practical filmmaking. The director revealed that:

* Real Sets: The team built a physical plane and spent weeks filming the nearly 10-minute crash sequence into the Pacific Ocean.

* No AI: Harlin avoided digital doubles and AI, preferring to physically "rip open" the plane walls for a visceral, old-school feel.

* Underwater Endurance: Actors, including stars Aaron Eckhart and Sir Ben Kingsley, were often 30 feet underwater, performing upside down while divers provided oxygen between takes.

The "Shark" Behind the Scenes

Simmons praised Harlin as the "heart and soul" of the film, comparing his own role as a producer to a "suction fish" attached to a winner. He noted that the quality of the script and Harlin’s reputation were key in attracting top-tier talent like Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley.

Deep Water is currently playing in theaters nationwide, featuring a cast that includes Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, and Molly Wright.
