Matt Damon Returns to SNL Ahead of Summer Blockbuster 'The Odyssey'
Matt Damon is back at Studio 8H this weekend for the penultimate episode of Saturday Night Live’s 51st season. While Damon is a veteran of the big screen, he admitted that preparing for his third turn as host is a "totally different discipline" that offers an instant audience reaction films simply cannot match.
The appearance comes as Damon gears up for the release of one of the summer’s most anticipated films, "The Odyssey."
From the Cold Tundra to 'The Odyssey'
Directed by Christopher Nolan, the sweeping IMAX epic stars Damon as the Greek hero Odysseus. The production has already made headlines for its grueling nature, with Damon describing it as the hardest movie he has ever done. Following Nolan’s signature style, the film relied heavily on in-camera practical effects rather than CGI, placing a physical toll on the entire cast.
"Chris was just really ambitious with the idea to try to do all of that and really get it all in-camera," Damon said. "It was really taxing on everybody in a wonderful way." To prepare for the role, Damon even grew a real beard for a year after Nolan declined to use artificial facial hair.
A Familiar Face in Studio 8H
Damon is no stranger to the SNL stage, though his hosting record is surprisingly slim. His last major appearance was a surprise, last-minute cameo in the 2018 season opener, where he portrayed Brett Kavanaugh.
"They called me the night before and I was making a movie on the other side of the country," Damon recalled. "I literally got here by the skin of my teeth and just ran on and did it."
This week, Damon says he is savoring the "new energy" provided by the show’s young cast. He will be joined by musical guest Noah Kahan, who is making his second appearance on the show following the massive success of his latest album, The Great Divide.
The Road to the Finale
As the season winds down, this Saturday's episode serves as the lead-in to the much-anticipated season finale on May 16, which will be hosted by Will Ferrell with musical guest Paul McCartney.
For fans of Damon, the SNL appearance offers a comedic reprieve before he returns to the serious, high-stakes drama of the Trojan War when "The Odyssey" hits theaters on July 17, 2026.
