Palm Desert Launches “Homeward Paws” Program to Encourage Pet Adoption

The City of Palm Desert is launching a new adoption incentive program designed to help overcrowded animal shelters across the Coachella Valley.

The program, called “Homeward Paws,” officially begins Monday, May 11, and offers Palm Desert residents a $125 gift card when they adopt a cat or dog from the Coachella Valley Animal Campus.

City officials say the program is funded using savings from the city’s animal services budget during the first two quarters of the fiscal year.

According to Erica Castellanos with the city manager’s office, the initiative is intended to encourage more residents to adopt pets while helping reduce shelter overcrowding and long-term animal care costs. Officials say the city currently pays daily sheltering costs for animals housed at the facility, making faster adoptions beneficial for both taxpayers and the animals themselves.

To qualify, adopters must be Palm Desert residents, ensure the adopted animal originated from the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, and properly license the pet. Residents must also bring proof of residency and adoption paperwork to the visitor center at the library to receive the gift card.

City leaders say the incentive is meant to help new pet owners purchase essential supplies and create a successful transition for adopted animals into their new homes.
