Person Fatally Struck by Frontier Airlines Plane at Denver Airport After Jumping Perimeter Fence
A Friday night flight at Denver International Airport turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a departing Frontier Airlines plane. The incident, which occurred late Friday, May 8, 2026, forced an emergency evacuation of hundreds of passengers and triggered a federal investigation.
According to airport officials, the unidentified individual jumped a perimeter fence and entered the runway area. Just two minutes later, at approximately 11:19 p.m. local time, the person was hit by Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles. Flight tracking data indicated the aircraft was accelerating at roughly 146 miles per hour when the collision occurred.
The impact was immediate and devastating. Pilots reported a "thud" followed by an engine fire and smoke filling the cabin. The flight crew successfully aborted the takeoff and brought the plane to a halt on the runway. With smoke in the cabin, the crew deployed emergency slides to evacuate the 224 passengers and seven crew members on board.
While the pedestrian was killed in the strike, the evacuation itself resulted in minor injuries for several passengers. Denver International Airport reported that 12 people were treated for minor injuries, with five of them transported to local hospitals for further evaluation. Passenger Jose Cervantes described the harrowing moment the engine caught fire, telling local reporters he feared the cabin would be consumed by flames before they could escape.
The Denver Fire Department arrived quickly to extinguish the engine fire. By Saturday morning, the airport confirmed that most of the passengers had been rebooked and had departed on a new flight to Los Angeles.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are leading the investigation into how the security breach occurred. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that the trespasser "deliberately" scaled the fence before running onto the active runway. Despite the breach, airport officials stated that a subsequent inspection showed the perimeter fenceline remained intact.
Runway 17L, the site of the collision, remained closed through Saturday morning for evidence collection and scene processing. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, but they have confirmed the person was not an airport employee. Investigations by the Denver Sheriff's Department and federal agencies are ongoing to determine a motive for the trespass.
