Decision 2026

California’s 2026 Governor’s Race Heats Up as Candidates Clash Over the "California Dream" and Rising Costs

The race to become California’s next governor is intensifying as the primary election draws near. With less than a month until voters head to the polls on June 2, 2026, top contenders are laying out competing visions for the nation’s most populous state, focusing heavily on the affordability crisis that has impacted millions of residents.

Leading Republican candidate Steve Hilton has centered his campaign on restoring the California dream through smaller government and increased affordability. Hilton has pledged to bring gas prices down to $3 per gallon by ending what he calls climate dogma and utilizing the state’s natural gas reserves for electricity generation. He also emphasizes border security, calling for an end to jurisdictional conflicts between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

On the Democratic side, former U.S. Health Secretary Javier Becerra is running on a platform of leadership and experience. Becerra highlights his history of defending California’s sanctuary laws and climate policies against federal challenges. He has taken a hardline stance on immigration enforcement within the state, promising to investigate and prosecute ICE while continuing investments in immigrant communities.

Former U.S. Representative Katie Porter is focusing her efforts on the financial pressures facing working families. Porter argues that increasing the speed and innovation of housing construction could reduce rent and mortgage costs by up to 20 percent. She continues to use her background in consumer protection to target corporate profits, which she cites as a primary driver of the high cost of living in the Golden State.

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is prioritizing physical infrastructure and the broader economy. Villaraigosa points to the 60 percent increase in utility costs over the last six years as a sign that the state must do more to support families who are being priced out of their homes. His plan includes significant investment in roads, highways, and housing development to prevent further population loss.

As the June primary approaches, these candidates are entering a defining stretch that will determine the leadership of California for years to come. NBC Palm Springs will continue in-depth coverage of Decision 2026 throughout the week across all newscasts.
