Major Crash Near College of the Desert Leaves One Critically Injured, Traffic Backed Up for Blocks

UPDATE - 10:45 am: Information from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department detailing the initial carjacking report.

What initially appeared to be a routine traffic collision near the College of the Desert Palm Desert campus this morning has turned out to be the end of a carjacking chase.

At 8:40 a.m., deputies from the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station responded to State Highway 74 and Bursera Way after a suspect stole a victim's vehicle. While deputies searched the area, they were alerted to a crash at Parkview Drive near the college, and quickly determined the overturned vehicle was the one that had just been stolen.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The driver of the second vehicle, who had no connection to the carjacking, was also taken to a hospital in stable condition. The original carjacking victim was uninjured.

Riverside County Cal Fire had logged the crash at 8:44 a.m. Heavy traffic backed up in both directions on Monterey Avenue as crews worked the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says no additional details are available at this time.
