Federal Charges Filed Against Owners of Ship That Destroyed Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against the owners and operators of the Dali cargo ship, the vessel that crashed into and destroyed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland in March 2024.

Six people were killed when the ship struck the bridge, and the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest in the country, was shut down for months in the aftermath.

Prosecutors have charged shipping companies Synergy Marine and Synergy Maritime, along with employee Karthik Nair, with conspiracy, obstruction, and lying to federal investigators.

If convicted, the parties could be on the hook for billions of dollars in restitution, on top of a civil settlement that has already been reached following the crash.
