Riverside County Supervisors Approve Trash Rate Increase for Unincorporated Areas
Residents in unincorporated communities across Riverside County will see an increase in their trash bills starting this summer. The Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on Tuesday to approve a series of rate adjustments for waste collection services, which will result in a roughly 3 percent increase for most residential and commercial customers.
The fee hikes will impact customers served by the countys four primary waste haulers: Burrtec Waste, CR&R Inc., Desert Valley Disposal, and Waste Management. The adjustments apply to numerous unincorporated areas, including Bermuda Dunes, Thousand Palms, North Palm Springs, Cabazon, and Woodcrest, as well as communities like De Luz and Gilman Hot Springs.
County officials from the Department of Environmental Health stated that the increases are necessary to keep pace with inflation and the rising costs of fuel, landfill fees, and vehicle maintenance. Under the new rate structure, Burrtec customers in areas like Bermuda Dunes and Thousand Palms will see monthly rates increase to approximately 32.18 dollars. Residents serviced by Desert Valley Disposal in North Palm Springs can expect a monthly increase of about 1.28 dollars.
While the Board of Supervisors typically reviews these inflationary adjustments annually, some past proposals have faced opposition during times of economic hardship. However, this years request passed without public comment during the hearing. The waste haulers base their requested adjustments on the Consumer Price Index for the region to ensure that the revenue covers the increasing expenses of hauling and processing solid waste.
The new rates are scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026. Residents with questions about their specific service area or monthly bill are encouraged to contact their designated waste provider for updated fee schedules.
