Violent Brawl Outside West Hollywood Hot Dog Carts Sparks Safety and Sanitation Debate
A cell phone video capturing a brawl between two women outside hot dog vendor carts in West Hollywood has reignited a debate over street vending and public safety. The incident occurred early Sunday morning on Santa Monica Boulevard, a location frequently occupied by multiple street vendors. Local business owners characterize the fight as the latest in a series of troubling incidents involving unlicensed carts in the area.
Larry Block, owner of the nearby Block Party Store, provided surveillance footage showing vendors dumping bacon grease directly onto the pavement. Block stated that this practice leads to slippery walkways and rat infestations that eventually spread into local shops. He also reported personal encounters with violence, claiming a vendor attempted to punch him after he requested they move.
Other business owners expressed concerns regarding fire hazards, citing a video from last summer where a hot dog cart was completely engulfed in flames near customers. There are also allegations that many of the workers at these stands are underage, with dozens of carts being unloaded from trucks late at night on San Vicente.
West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman noted that a 2019 law decriminalizing street vending has made enforcement increasingly difficult. Because vendors often operate for short periods or move quickly, code enforcement officers frequently arrive after the vendors have already left.
The issue is further complicated by political tensions surrounding immigration enforcement. WeHo Times publisher Paulo Murrillo mentioned that individuals who criticize the vendors often face accusations of racism, which has discouraged some from speaking up. Business owners argue they are not receiving enough support from city hall on what they believe should be treated as a matter of public safety and sanitation.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department is currently investigating the weekend brawl. While investigators have spoken with the alleged victim, they have not yet identified the other individual involved in the fight.
