Candidates Outline Priorities in California’s 36th Assembly District Race

Candidates running for California’s 36th Assembly District are continuing to make their case to voters as the June primary election approaches.

Among the Democratic candidates is Ida Obeso Martinez, an Imperial councilmember and nurse practitioner. Martinez says her campaign is centered on affordable healthcare, stronger schools, infrastructure investment, economic opportunity, and improving public safety through prevention, mental health services, and law enforcement support.

Former El Centro mayor Tomas Oliva is also emphasizing healthcare and economic development. Oliva points to his leadership during the merger involving El Centro Regional Medical Center while advocating for transportation improvements, workforce development, and investment tied to Lithium Valley projects.

Another prominent Democratic candidate is Oscar Ortiz, a current councilmember and former mayor in Indio. Ortiz says his campaign focuses on affordability, education, housing, and support for immigrant communities. He also highlighted his own background as an immigrant and says he wants to continue expanding economic opportunities and social services throughout the district.

Republican incumbent Jeff Gonzalez is campaigning on bipartisan leadership, public safety, and advocacy for families caring for loved ones with disabilities. The Marine Corps veteran says his work in Sacramento has focused on protecting in-home supportive services and building relationships across party lines.

Voters in the 36th Assembly District will help decide the outcome during California’s upcoming primary election.
