Coachella Breaks Ground on First Affordable Senior Housing Complex
Leaders in Coachella officially broke ground on Casa Sienna, the city’s first affordable housing complex dedicated to seniors.
The new four-story development will be located in the Pueblo Viejo District and will include 53 affordable housing units designed to support seniors living on fixed incomes while helping them maintain their independence.
City leaders, developers and community members gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony, calling the project a major investment in Coachella’s growing senior population.
Plans for Casa Sienna include climate-controlled hallways, a community room and computer access areas aimed at improving residents’ quality of life, especially during the Coachella Valley’s extreme summer heat.
Officials say the project will also connect residents with transportation services, including free transit programs and rideshare assistance to help seniors access medical appointments, shopping and other essential services.
The $38 million development was funded in part through a more than $22 million Transformative Climate Communities grant, a California program focused on supporting underserved communities impacted by pollution and climate-related challenges.
City leaders say the project has been years in the making and is part of the broader Coachella Prospera initiative focused on economic development, housing and community improvements throughout the city.
Officials say Casa Sienna is intended to help address a growing need for affordable senior housing before the demand becomes even greater in the years ahead.
