Smithsonian Castle to Temporarily Reopen for Nation's 250th Birthday

Smithsonian Castle to Temporarily Reopen for Nation's 250th Birthday

The Smithsonian Castle will open its doors again this summer, pausing an ongoing renovation to welcome visitors as part of the nation's 250th birthday celebration.

The historic building on Washington D.C.'s National Mall has been closed since early 2023 for its first major renovation in more than 50 years. Construction will pause from May 22 through early September, giving the public a window to step back inside the landmark.

During the celebration, the Castle will serve as a visitor center, housing a café, gift shop, and a special exhibition called "American Aspirations."

Originally opened in 1855, the Castle remains the Smithsonian's oldest building.
