Surge in Noise Complaints at Sonoma County Airport Triggers Push for Flight Path Changes
The Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport is facing a historic surge in noise complaints from neighboring residents who say the skies have become increasingly loud. According to airport officials, the facility received nearly 30,000 formal complaints in 2025, a stark contrast to the approximately 1,100 complaints logged in 2023.
The trend has only accelerated in 2026. During the first quarter of the year, the airport received 15,530 complaints, with 8,500 of those coming in April alone. Residents in communities like Occidental and Sebastopol in West Sonoma County trace the sharp increase to two primary factors: a 2024 change in FAA departure patterns and the recent launch of Southwest Airlines service.
Southwest began operations at the airport on April 7, 2026, offering nonstop flights to San Diego, Las Vegas, Burbank, and Denver. While the service provides more travel options for Wine Country visitors, local homeowners say the added jet traffic, which includes departures as early as 6 a.m., has reached a breaking point.
The FAA controls all flight procedures and air traffic once planes leave the ground. Airport manager Jon Stout noted that the new published departure routes concentrate traffic and lower the altitude at which jets cross the West County region. Stout said that the airport has hired consultants to study potential changes, such as requiring aircraft to reach higher altitudes before turning west, which could help spread the noise burden.
In response to the noise, residents have formed the West Sonoma County Jet Noise Coalition. Members like Paul Zehrer report that on busy Sunday afternoons, flights can be seen and heard coming just minutes apart. The coalition plans to continue pressure on airport officials, county supervisors, and congressional representatives for a return to older flight procedures until a full environmental review can be conducted.
