Why Pediatricians Are Pushing to Protect School Recess
A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics is highlighting the importance of recess in helping children stay healthy, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
The group released updated guidance this week encouraging schools to protect recess time and recognize it as an essential part of a child’s development, not just a break in the school day.
Pediatricians say recess gives children opportunities to be physically active, build social skills, reduce stress, and improve focus in the classroom. The new policy statement also warns against taking away recess as a form of punishment, saying children benefit most when they have consistent opportunities for free play and movement throughout the school day.
Experts say recess can help support emotional well-being, encourage creativity, and even improve academic performance by helping students return to class more engaged and ready to learn. The guidance comes as many educators and health professionals continue to raise concerns about increasing stress levels, screen time, and reduced physical activity among children.
