Firebirds Even Series with Dominant 4-0 Shutout Win Over Eagles

The Coachella Valley Firebirds delivered a statement win Friday night, shutting out the Colorado Eagles 4-0 to even their Round 3 Calder Cup Playoff series at one game each.

From the opening puck drop, the intensity was at playoff level. While it technically wasn’t a must-win game for Coachella Valley, the stakes were certainly high. Falling behind 2-0 in the series before heading to Colorado for the remainder of the matchup would have created a difficult road ahead for the Firebirds.

Instead, Coachella Valley responded with one of its most complete performances of the postseason.

For the first two periods, both goaltenders stood tall. Firebirds goaltender Nikke Kokko and Eagles goalie Trent Miner traded save after save in a defensive battle that kept fans on edge throughout the night.

Then early in the third period, the breakthrough finally came.

After nearly five full periods without scoring, JR Avon found the back of the net to give the Firebirds the lead and ignite the home crowd. From there, Coachella Valley never let up, adding three more goals to put the game out of reach.

Kokko was sensational in net, finishing with a 33-save shutout to secure the win.

Following the game, the Firebirds spoke about the patience and composure that helped them get back into the series.

“Like today I feel in the first period they get some good chances and they don’t score,” the team said after the game. “And of course then it’s our turn to try and we score and win that game. I think our patience is really a big thing for the playoffs.”

The series now shifts to Colorado, where the Firebirds will play the rest of the series on the road. Game 3 is set for tomorrow at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Game 4 will take place Wednesday, May 20, and if necessary, Game 5 would be Friday, May 22.

And the Firebirds won’t be the only ones traveling.

NBC Palm Springs Sports Director Tim O’Brien will be on location in Colorado for the remainder of the series, bringing exclusive interviews, live coverage, and the latest updates throughout the Firebirds’ playoff run across NBC Palm Springs broadcasts, social media platforms, and online.
