Firebirds Fall in Game 3 as Local Track Stars Shine at CIF Finals

The Coachella Valley Firebirds are facing adversity once again in the Calder Cup Playoffs after falling 4-1 to the Colorado Eagles in Game 3 on Tuesday night.

The Firebirds came out aggressive early, looking much sharper and faster than they did in Game 2. Coachella Valley struck first in the opening period with a gritty goal on the road, but the momentum quickly shifted. Colorado answered later in the first period to tie the game before exploding offensively in the third period, scoring three goals in an eight-minute stretch to take control of the matchup.

Despite the difficult loss, the Firebirds locker room remains confident heading into a must-win Game 4 Wednesday night.

“To start off, I mean, how we wanted to,” one Firebirds player said postgame. “It’s a tough barn to play in, so I thought we got off to a good start. But then just some simple mistakes that we kind of gave them, and they capitalized.”

The team knows the challenge ahead, but believes its postseason experience can help spark another comeback.

“Back against the wall, we’ve done it before,” the player added. “Trust this group and we should be all right.”

That confidence is backed by history. The Firebirds are undefeated in elimination games during the playoffs, posting a 4-0 record in win-or-go-home situations. Game 4 is set for Wednesday at 6 p.m. Pacific time, with local watch parties planned across the Coachella Valley.

Meanwhile, several local track and field athletes delivered standout performances at the CIF Southern Section Division Finals this past weekend.

Shadow Hills High School junior Malia Strange captured Division III championships in both triple jump and the 100-meter hurdles. Strange also broke her own school record in the hurdles with a time of 14.45 seconds.

“Just coming here new and making my mark a little bit as a new student, I was pretty proud,” Strange said. “I know I could have done better. I slowed down at the end of the race, so that was disappointing, but I still beat my own record, so that’s pretty cool.”

Other local standouts included Joaquin Sterling of Shadow Hills High School, who won the shot put title, and Palm Desert High School’s Jax Penny, who captured a Division II championship in hurdles.

The athletes will now prepare for the CIF Masters Qualifiers this weekend as they continue their push toward the state championships.
