Rancho Mirage Astronomy Guide Shares Secrets to Game Show Success After Multiple Big Wins

Getting cast on a television game show might seem like a matter of pure luck, but local enthusiast and serial contestant Eric Cunningham says it actually comes down to strategy. Cunningham joined host Gianna in the studio to break down the reality of competing on television, sharing tips on how regular viewers can catch the eye of Hollywood casting producers.

Cunningham is no stranger to the high stakes of network television. Years ago, he walked away from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire with a 100,000-dollar grand prize. More recently, he tested his luck on Let's Make a Deal, meaning he has mastered the art of the audition process. Host Gianna is also a veteran of the genre, having previously appeared on Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and The Weakest Link.

According to Cunningham, the absolute most important step for an aspiring contestant is to establish a memorable hook. Because producers review thousands of digital applications, standouts must place themselves into a specific, easily identifiable category. For his recent appearance, Cunningham leaned into his real-life role as an astronomical tour guide at the Rancho Mirage Observatory. He amplified this persona by wearing a unique, space-themed suit with matching socks.

Cunningham's vibrant personality and distinct branding paid off during his time with host Wayne Brady. After initially winning a vacation to Greece, he chose to trade the trip for a shot at the legendary "Big Deal." Following some statistical advice from his brother, Cunningham selected Door Number Two. While he bypassed a pinball machine behind Door One and 4,700 dollars in cash behind Door Three, his gamble rewarded him with a luxury trip to Jamaica.

However, the duo also discussed the less glamorous side of winning big on television: the IRS. Cunningham cautioned future players that all game show winnings—including physical merchandise and vacations—are treated as standard personal income at the end of the fiscal year. Winners must be financially prepared to cover the substantial tax burdens that accompany their prizes.

As for what comes next, Cunningham revealed he is currently eyeing an audition for the hit trivia show The Floor, which films in Ireland and features 100 contestants competing on a massive LED grid for a 250,000-dollar jackpot.
