Investigation Continues After Elderly Couple Found Dead in Bermuda Dunes Home

An investigation is ongoing after an elderly couple was found dead Friday inside their home in Bermuda Dunes, prompting a homicide probe by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the home for a welfare check, where they discovered 80-year-old Donald Whitaker and 79-year-old Karen Whitaker deceased inside the residence. Authorities later confirmed the case had been turned over to homicide investigators, though officials have released few details about what may have happened.

Friends and neighbors say a troubling situation had been unfolding in the months leading up to the deaths, involving what they describe as an elaborate online scam targeting Karen Whitaker. According to those close to the family, the scam allegedly involved someone impersonating actor Tom Selleck through social media.

Sources say the situation escalated over time, with repeated financial requests allegedly resulting in thousands of dollars being sent to the scammer. Community members also claim that Adult Protective Services had previously visited the home in connection with concerns about the suspected fraud.

One local community leader said the situation caused significant emotional distress within the household as the scam reportedly continued despite warnings.

Authorities have not confirmed any connection between the alleged scam and the deaths, and officials say the investigation remains active.

Residents in the Bermuda Dunes Country Club area say they are concerned about what may have led to the tragedy, while law enforcement continues to withhold further details pending the ongoing investigation.
