Officials Urge Caution as National Bike Safety Month Highlights Valley Road Risks
May marks National Bike Safety Month, and local law enforcement agencies across the Coachella Valley are urging both drivers and cyclists to remain alert and follow traffic laws to prevent serious crashes.
Deputy Paul Abrego with the Riverside County Sheriff's Office says California law requires drivers to give bicyclists at least three feet of space when passing. He also warned that cyclists are increasingly sharing roads with fast-moving e-bikes, which can raise the severity of collisions.
Officials say awareness is especially important in areas with marked bike lanes and signage, emphasizing that drivers must remain attentive to their surroundings at all times.
National data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows more than 1,100 bicyclists were killed in crashes across the United States in 2023, marking the highest number on record.
Local officials say the goal of Bike Safety Month is to encourage safer habits year-round and reduce preventable injuries and fatalities on roadways throughout the region.
