San Diego Mosque Shooting Suspects and Heroic Security Guard Identified Following Deadly Hate Crime

Federal and local law enforcement agencies are continuing to process a massive crime scene in San Diego following a horrific Monday morning shooting at the region's largest mosque. Police are investigating the targeted attack as an explicit hate crime after two teenage gunmen opened fire outside the Islamic Center of San Diego, killing three adults before turning their weapons on themselves.

The two deceased suspects have been formally identified by law enforcement as 18-year-old Caleb Vasquez and 17-year-old Kane Clark. Hours before the active shooter broadcast went out, Clark’s mother had contacted the San Diego Police Department to report her son as a suicidal runaway juvenile. The mother informed dispatchers that the teenager had left their home in camouflage attire alongside an unnamed friend, taking her vehicle and several family firearms. She noted that her son had left behind a troubling note, which immediately prompted a large-scale threat assessment by local police units.

Tragically, before officers could intercept the teenagers, the pair arrived at the Islamic Center and began firing. The mosque was heavily occupied at the time, housing both worshippers and an adjacent school filled with children and teachers. The immediate escalation was halted outside the building by the facility's security guard, who has been identified as Amin Abdullah. Police leadership confirmed that Abdullah acted heroically, putting himself directly in harm's way to minimize the threat and block the gunmen from breaching the main facility. Abdullah was fatally wounded during the encounter, but authorities credit his ultimate sacrifice with saving dozens of lives.

Following the initial barrage of gunfire, an active-shooter response was deployed, drawing heavily armed tactical units and federal agents to the campus. Emergency personnel successfully escorted all the children, staff, and teachers out of the classrooms to safety. Shortly after securing the immediate perimeter, officers responded to reports of additional gunfire a few blocks away, where they discovered the suspects' missing vehicle. Inside, both Vasquez and Clark were found dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

As the FBI conducts a thorough search of a residence tied to the suspects, devastated community members are gathering to lean on one another for emotional support. Local leaders and civil rights advocates filled the neighborhood to forcefully condemn the assault, declaring that Islamophobia and targeted bigotry have no home in San Diego. Parents of students attending the center's school expressed deep heartbreak over the emotional trauma inflicted on the young children, while the city continues to mourn the victims of what officials have called a community's absolute worst nightmare.
