Wind-Driven Brush Fire Burns Nearly 200 Acres Near Homeland

Firefighters battled a wind-driven brush fire north of Homeland today that scorched nearly 200 acres and destroyed several outbuildings.

The fire was first reported shortly after 12:20 p.m. near Juniper Springs Road and Juniper Flats Road, just north of Highway 74.

Officials say flames spread quickly due to windy conditions, with the fire burning dangerously close to traffic lanes. Fire crews requested a full shutdown of the southbound side of the highway to protect the public and allow emergency crews to work safely.

Multiple helicopters and air tankers were deployed to help slow the fire’s forward progress from the air while ground crews worked to contain the flames.

Authorities confirmed one firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze. No civilian injuries have been reported at this time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
