Miracle in Algiers: Car Plows Into Crowded Olive Branch Cafe Dining Room
NEW ORLEANS, La. — A routine lunch hour at a beloved neighborhood establishment turned into a scene of absolute terror when an out-of-control vehicle crashed directly through the front entrance. The violent collision occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Olive Branch Cafe in Algiers, sending customers and waitstaff scrambling for safety.
Surveillance footage from inside the restaurant captured the exact moment a Nissan Altima plowed through the front doors. The vehicle shattered brickwork and glass, careening straight into the active dining room before stopping just feet away from diners and employees.
Despite the explosive impact and the chaotic aftermath, restaurant owner Russell Autry described the outcome as a miracle. Paramedics reported that no one inside the building sustained serious or life-threatening injuries.
Autry noted that he was inside the building when the crash occurred and immediately knew something had hit the property because he could feel the entire structure shake. Outside footage revealed that the car had completely veered off General De Gaulle Drive, traveling through a garden area before busting through the storefront.
Jake LeBlanc, a manager within the restaurant's network, noted that reviewing the security footage was incredibly frightening, as a former manager was standing right in front of the vehicle's path just moments before the impact.
The young woman behind the wheel was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, though her current condition and the exact cause of the crash remain unclear. Tow trucks arrived later that evening, successfully pulling the sedan out of the heavily damaged storefront by 8:00 PM Wednesday.
The Olive Branch Cafe has been a community staple for more than 20 years. While the interior is now littered with bricks and debris, Autry remains thankful that the damage is limited to things that can be fixed and replaced. Still, the incident has renewed serious concerns regarding traffic safety and chronic speeding along the busy thoroughfare, with ownership noting that two or three major accidents have occurred right outside the plaza in just the last few months.
