Water Wise Wednesday: How to Protect Your Garden During Triple-Digit Heat

As temperatures begin climbing into the triple digits across the Coachella Valley, the Coachella Valley Water District is reminding residents to prepare their gardens for the summer heat.

During this month’s Water Wise Wednesday segment, Communications Manager Lorraine Garcia shared simple but important ways homeowners can protect their plants while conserving water.

One of the biggest recommendations is cleaning up crowded garden beds and adding mulch. Garcia says mulch helps protect plant roots from extreme heat, retains moisture in the soil, and helps prevent weeds from growing.

She also advises against pruning plants during the summer months because plants become more sensitive in high temperatures and pruning can cause additional damage.

As the heat increases, many plants will require more water. Garcia says residents with smart irrigation controllers can allow the systems to automatically adjust watering schedules. Those without smart controllers can use the district’s irrigation guide to determine how much water different plants need throughout the summer.

Another important reminder is to routinely inspect irrigation systems for clogged lines or blockages to ensure water is flowing properly and efficiently.
