Deadly Staten Island Shipyard Explosion Injures Over 30 Firefighters

STATEN ISLAND, New York — One person has died and more than 30 people, primarily members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), were injured following a violent explosion and fire at a Staten Island shipyard on Friday afternoon.

Officials confirmed the deceased individual was a civilian. The incident also left one other civilian injured and at least 34 FDNY members hurt, including a fire marshal who remains in critical condition and a firefighter who was seriously injured. All victims were immediately transported to area hospitals.

The fire originally broke out around 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time in the basement of a metal structure located at the rear of a shipping dock on Richmond Terrace, between Lockman and Andros avenues. Responding crews were met with heavy smoke and extremely limited visibility, alongside reports that two workers were trapped in the basement. FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito noted that confined spaces create exceptionally dangerous operations for any rescue team.

The incident rapidly escalated to a two-alarm fire. Shortly after emergency personnel arrived and began conducting searches inside the structure, on top of the barge, and adjacent to the barge, a powerful explosion tore through the area. Local residents blocks away reported hearing the loud blast. The civilian fatality was discovered at the scene immediately following the explosion.

More than 200 first responders were sent to the scene to battle the blaze and managed to bring it under control by approximately 7:20 p.m.

Medical officials stated that the critically injured fire marshal sustained significant head trauma, including a small skull fracture and a brain bleed, and was intubated upon arrival at the hospital. The seriously injured firefighter remains under close observation to monitor for potential muscle damage, though officials noted he was doing very well by Friday evening.

Doctors emphasized that the unique dangers of an explosion in a tight space can cause internal damage without leaving external marks. An attending physician explained that the victims are suffering from silent blast energy that penetrates organs in a confined space. Thankfully, medical staff confirmed that neither of the most seriously hurt firefighters sustained penetrating injuries or blast damage to their heart, lungs, or abdomen.

The identity of the deceased civilian has not yet been publicly released, and a second civilian suffered serious injuries. The exact cause of both the initial fire and the subsequent explosion remains unknown.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella asked the community to stick together and keep the first responders and families in their prayers. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also posted her support on X, stating that state agencies are actively coordinating with city officials as investigators work to determine the cause of the disaster.
