Desert Hot Springs Man Sentenced in 2017 Deadly Shooting

A Desert Hot Springs man who admitted to a deadly shooting nearly a decade ago has been sentenced to 30 years to life in state prison.

Twenty-eight-year-old Richard Alex Bernal previously pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors earlier this month.

According to investigators with the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, Bernal fatally shot 35-year-old Emanuel Jenkins on June 15, 2017. Authorities did not release additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The sentence was handed down at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
