Millions Expected to Travel for Memorial Day Weekend Amid High Gas Prices

With Memorial Day weekend officially underway, millions of Americans are heading to their holiday destinations.

According to AAA, roughly 45 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more during the holiday period, including nearly 39 million travelers hitting the road by car.

Drivers are also facing some of the highest Memorial Day gas prices in years. GasBuddy predicts the national average price for gasoline will reach about $4.48 per gallon on Memorial Day, making it the second-highest Memorial Day average ever recorded. Prices across California remain significantly higher than the national average.

Meanwhile, Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office is urging Californians to avoid filling up at Chevron gas stations after the company displayed ads blaming state regulations and policies for rising fuel costs.

A spokesperson for Chevron responded by calling the governor’s remarks irresponsible, arguing that California’s high gas taxes and regulatory fees are among the highest in the nation.
