Trump Meets With National Security Officials to Weigh Next Steps on Iran War
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump met on Friday with top U.S. national security officials at the White House to evaluate the path forward regarding the war with Iran. The session concluded without an immediate decision on the administration's next steps as diplomatic efforts continue to stall.
The routine high-level briefing occurred against the backdrop of ongoing international mediation. Delegations from Qatar and Pakistan recently traveled to Tehran in an attempt to broker an agreement to end the conflict. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei stated that very deep differences remain between the Iranian and American positions, noting that securing a finalized deal will require additional time and further negotiations.
Frustrated by the slow pace of the diplomatic talks, President Trump has actively reviewed options to resume military action. Earlier in the week, the president stated he was within an hour of authorizing military strikes against Iran before pausing the operation at the request of Gulf partner nations. He has since given Iran a loose deadline of early next week to present an acceptable proposal to conclude the hostilities.
Underscoring the critical nature of the current situation, President Trump scuttled his planned weekend travel. He canceled a trip to his golf resort in New Jersey and confirmed he would not attend his son Donald Trump Jr.'s upcoming wedding in the Bahamas. In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained that circumstances pertaining to the government required him to remain at the White House during this important period.
The Friday meeting included Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also referenced the Oval Office session during his commencement remarks at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. While some administration officials have expressed cautious optimism that negotiations are moving forward, it remains unclear how the primary points of contention between the two nations will be resolved before Trump's early-week deadline expires.
