Coachella Valley Track Stars Shine as Local Flag Football Team Eyes Nationals

Local athletes across the Coachella Valley continue to prove the desert is filled with rising sports talent.

At the Masters qualifiers this past weekend, two local track stars delivered standout performances. Shadow Hills High School junior Malia Strange captured first place in the triple jump after soaring more than 39 feet. The victory adds another accomplishment to her growing resume as she now holds the most points in program history with 38 and becomes one of the few athletes from the school to win a Masters qualifier event.

Palm Desert High School also had a strong showing thanks to Jax Penny, who won the Masters qualifier in the 300-meter hurdles. His performance secured another major moment for Coachella Valley track and field representation on the big stage.

Meanwhile, another group of young athletes is preparing for an opportunity of a lifetime.

The Flex Premier 12U flag football team, made up of some of the top middle school talent in the Coachella Valley, is gearing up for a national championship tournament in Indiana. The team represents the LA Rams after winning regional tournaments and earning a chance to compete against some of the best youth teams in the country.

For many of the players, flag football is more than just a game. It serves as a way to sharpen fundamentals, improve speed, and build confidence before transitioning into tackle football.

“It helps me focus on the ball more, getting loose, getting faster, and not worrying about getting hit,” said player Jeremiah Gordillo. “Once we get into tackle football, I already have the fundamentals down from flag.”

The team continues to compete in local tournaments leading up to nationals, using every game as preparation for the biggest stage many of these young athletes have ever experienced.

For coaches and families, the experience is about more than wins and losses. It’s about showcasing Coachella Valley talent on a national platform while teaching teamwork, discipline, and growth.

Despite the pressure that comes with national competition, excitement continues to build around a team many believe has the potential to make serious noise this summer.
