Communities Nationwide Honor Inspiring Teachers and Retiring School Staff

NEW YORK — In a week filled with challenging headlines, communities across the United States came together to spread joy and love, throwing massive celebrations for educators and school staff members who have dedicated their lives to lifting up the next generation.

On this week's segment of "Good News Tonight," NBC’s Jose Diaz-Balart shared several inspiring stories, starting with a major surprise for Scott Messick, a beloved physical education teacher at Boothwyn Elementary School. Messick has been on medical leave as he battles a rare form of cancer and was not expected to return to his students until the next school year. However, the Philadelphia Phillies stepped in to throw a curveball, surprising Messick and his students on the field by honoring him as their 2026 All-Star Teacher. Messick expressed his deep gratitude, noting how amazing it is to see the community step up in his time of need.

The wave of gratitude for educators extended into New Jersey, where students at Saint Mary School in Williamstown rolled out a literal red carpet to give their teachers a true VIP welcome. Educators, including Jennifer Bottino, walked past cheering crowds and cheerleaders to kick off the school day. Faculty members remarked that because teachers spend so much time focusing on supporting and encouraging their students, having the children step back to celebrate them was incredibly meaningful.

The celebrations also marked emotional career milestones for long-serving staff. In Texas, Principal Doug Young kicked off his retirement with a bang at Lubbock High School. Ending a decorated 40-year career in education, Principal Young walked into a massive, roaring surprise assembly on his final day. He described the emotional send-off as a bittersweet ride filled with great memories of his faculty, students, and their collective accomplishments over the decades.

Meanwhile, at Lincoln Charter School in Denver, a legendary fixture of the school day completed his final route. Longtime bus driver Johnny Huss, affectionately known to students as "Mr. Johnny," was treated to a school-wide rally involving students, teachers, and local police officers on his final day before retirement.

For more than 15 years, Mr. Johnny was a dedicated friend and mentor who always went the extra mile. Reflecting on his journey, Huss explained that he tried to give every single child a fist bump and a warm good morning as they stepped onto his bus. Recognizing that he was the very first person in the school system the children would see each morning, Huss prioritized setting a bright, positive tone for their day, stating that above all else, he wants those thousands of kids to remember that he truly cared.
