McCallum Theatre Warns Buyers of Third-Party Ticket Scams and Marked-Up Prices
PALM DESERT, California — Ticket sales for the upcoming season at the McCallum Theatre are now open to the general public, but theater officials are issuing a critical warning regarding a growing problem with secondary ticket brokers and online scalpers.
Management at the McCallum Theatre stated that unauthorized third-party resale sites are dramatically marking up ticket prices, sometimes charging triple the face value. In more severe cases, unsuspecting patrons are being swindled into purchasing tickets that do not exist.
According to box office staff, unauthorized brokers typically create a standard patron account, purchase numerous seats in the balcony or mezzanine sections for $50 to $80 each, and then list them on secondary platforms for upwards of $300. While ticket reselling is legal under California state law, the venue is actively working behind the scenes to combat deceptive automated systems and fraudulent brokers.
Assistant Box Office Manager Adriana Meza highlighted the scale of the issue, revealing that venue personnel recently caught a single entity attempting to fabricate 180 false user accounts using false information to hoard ticket inventory.
Beyond price gouging, theater officials warned that some scammers engage in double-selling, providing the exact same seat information to multiple buyers. Victims are then instructed by the third-party seller to pick up their tickets at the box office will-call window, only to arrive on the night of the performance and find that no valid tickets exist under their name.
To ensure ticket validity and avoid inflated fees, the McCallum Theatre advises all patrons to buy tickets exclusively through its official portal. Representatives noted that being redirected to another domain during checkout is an immediate red flag that a buyer has left the secure page. Because the theatre lacks the legal authority to shut down independent resale sites, officials urge consumers to carefully verify the URL and look for the ".org" designation to guarantee they are transacting directly on the official mccallumtheatre.org website.
