Blowing Dust, Poor Air Quality Expected Across Coachella Valley Amid Strong Winds
Residents across parts of the Coachella Valley are being urged to take precautions as strong winds are expected to bring blowing dust and poor air quality to the region.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District says particle pollution could reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, particularly in and around Cathedral City.
Forecasters say wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected tonight and into tomorrow, creating hazardous conditions caused by windblown dust and reduced visibility.
Health officials are advising residents to stay indoors with windows and doors closed, avoid strenuous outdoor activity and use air conditioning or air purifiers if possible.
Officials also recommend avoiding the use of swamp coolers and whole-house fans, as they can pull polluted outdoor air into homes during dusty conditions.
The poor air quality and blowing dust are expected to continue through Wednesday morning. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions, are encouraged to take extra precautions.
