Coachella Valley Track Stars Shine at Masters as Local Youth Flag Football Team Heads to Nationals
PALM DESERT, California — High school track standouts and a premier youth flag football team are putting the Coachella Valley on the map following a weekend of dominant sports performances.
On the track, local athletes turned heads at the recent Masters qualifiers. Shadow Hills High School junior Malia Strange captured a major victory in the girls' triple jump, clearing an impressive distance of over 39 feet. With this win, Strange cements her legacy by holding the most points in program history with 38 points. She also stands alone as the only track and field athlete in Shadow Hills history to win a Masters title.
The valley's track representation continues with Jax Penny of Palm Desert High School, who secured a first-place finish in the boys' 300-meter hurdles. Penny, along with two of his Palm Desert High School teammates, successfully qualified to advance to the upcoming state championship meet.
On the football field, a talented squad of local middle schoolers is gearing up for a major national showcase. The Flex Premier 12U flag football team, a regional powerhouse composed of some of the best youth talent in the Coachella Valley, has earned the honor of representing the Los Angeles Rams at the upcoming NFL Flag Football Championship in Indiana.
The national tournament, which takes place in two months, is familiar territory for the star-studded 12U team. This trip marks their fourth time qualifying for nationals. Coaches noted that while their first appearance left room for growth, the team has significantly improved with each subsequent trip, fueling high hopes for a championship title this year.
For multi-sport athletes like Jeremiah Gordillo, who plays both tackle and flag football, the flag format offers an invaluable environment to master the fundamentals. Gordillo explained that the fast-paced nature of flag football helps him focus heavily on ball security, agility, and speed, giving him a mechanical advantage and the right fundamentals down before transitioning into the physical contact of tackle football.
While competing on a national stage brings plenty of nerves for the young athletes, Head Coach Garrett Shuler emphasized that the true value of the trip lies in the lifelong experience it creates for the kids. Shuler noted that traveling together, staying in hotels, and practicing as a unit allows a small group of kids from the Coachella Valley to test themselves against the absolute best teams in the country.
The fast and disciplined Flex Premier squad is currently in full preparation mode, using local tournaments as practice to maintain their competitive edge before flying out to Indiana.
