Coachella Valley Track Stars Shine at Masters as Shadow Hills Honors Fallen Heroes with Sunrise Murph Challenge
COACHELLA VALLEY, California — Local high school sports programs are celebrating a weekend of historic track and field dominance alongside a solemn, sunrise Memorial Day tribute on the field.
Both Palm Desert and Shadow Hills High School saw an exceptional postseason run, sending a combined five athletes to the prestigious Masters qualifiers. Palm Desert’s Jax Penny captured a first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, punching his ticket to the state championships alongside two of his Palm Desert teammates.
On the Shadow Hills side, standout athlete Malia Strange secured a historic victory in the triple jump. The performance marks the first time a track athlete from Shadow Hills has captured a Masters win. Local coaches expressed immense pride in the athletes, noting that the historic season was filled with immense dedication and a refusal to give up through the ups and downs of the year.
Beyond their championship schedules, students, faculty, and administrators gathered on the track field at Shadow Hills High School as the sun came up on Monday morning. Led by Coach DeTamble, who has spear-headed the local tradition since 2021, the group commemorated Memorial Day by participating in the annual "Murph Challenge."
The grueling physical sequence honors the memory of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient who sacrificed his life in Afghanistan. Designed to test an athlete's physical and mental limits, the challenge consists of a two-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 squats.
Participating students emphasized that pushing themselves through a difficult workout is a powerful way to show active respect for fallen service members, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten. Coaches also noted that the event serves as a lesson in camaraderie, with students continuously cheering on and supporting peers who struggled during the intense circuits.
As the holiday weekend wraps up, the weather across the Coachella Valley remains comfortable but changes are on the way. The current temperature sits at 82 degrees under mostly clear skies in Palm Springs, though shifting weather patterns are expected to move into the region over the next 48 hours.
