Road Work Ahead: What Drivers Need to Know This Week
Construction crews are working across the Coachella Valley this week, bringing lane closures and traffic slowdowns to several major roads in Cathedral City, Palm Springs, and La Quinta.
In Cathedral City, the final phase of construction on East Palm Canyon Drive kicks off Tuesday. Crews will close one westbound lane in the median between Date Palm Drive and Sungate Way as they finish up a new entryway monument. That closure runs through Friday, and drivers are asked to reduce speed through the work zone and watch for workers and equipment on the road.
Over in Palm Springs, concrete work on the South Palm Canyon Bridge is picking up. Crews are pouring concrete on the east side of the bridge this week, and flaggers will be out managing traffic as heavy trucks move in and out during the morning hours. Drivers should expect extra activity near the bridge and plan for delays. If you'd rather avoid it, Sunny Dunes or Mesquite Avenue to Belardo Road are your best alternate routes.
In La Quinta, utility crews with the Imperial Irrigation District are working on Washington Street between Avenue 48 and Avenue 47, creating changing lane closures that will slow northbound traffic, especially during the morning rush. That work is expected to last another two to three weeks. Drivers looking to skip the delay can turn right on Avenue 48 and head up to Adams Street or Dune Palms Road instead.
