American Airlines to Install SpaceX Starlink Wi-Fi on More Than 500 Planes

FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines announced a major upgrade to its inflight customer experience on Tuesday, securing a new partnership with SpaceX to bring ultra-fast Starlink internet service to hundreds of its planes.

Under the new agreement, the Fort Worth-based carrier will install Starlink’s high-speed satellite connectivity on more than 500 of its narrow-body aircraft. The rollout is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027, focusing primarily on the airline's Airbus fleet, which includes incoming A321XLR and A321neo deliveries. Utilizing a massive constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites, Starlink is capable of delivering "at-home level" broadband speeds, allowing passengers to stream videos, play online games, and participate in live video calls seamlessly at 35,000 feet.

The strategic move delivers another substantial boost to SpaceX's commercial footprint as Starlink rapidly expands its presence across the global airline industry. The announcement intensifies competition among major air carriers, many of which are turning to satellite internet providers to overhaul their onboard connectivity.

However, American Airlines officials specified that there are currently no plans to alter internet service providers on its fleet of wide-body Boeing aircraft or its regional jets. Those aircraft—including Boeing 737s, 777s, and 787 Dreamliners—will continue to utilize existing contracts with Viasat and Panasonic, meaning the Starlink upgrade will initially be exclusive to specific short-haul and domestic routes.

The upgrade comes as commercial airlines aggressively compete to improve their onboard amenities, with fast and reliable internet access increasingly serving as a key selling point for travelers. The high-speed infrastructure buildout follows a move by American Airlines earlier this year to offer free inflight Wi-Fi access to members of its AAdvantage frequent flyer program.
