Argentine Friends Bike Over 10,000 Miles Across 17 Countries to See National Team Play in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Three ultra-dedicated soccer fans from Argentina are nearing the final stretch of an extraordinary nine-month, 10,000-mile cycling journey across 17 countries, driven entirely by their passion to watch their national team compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The trio of long-distance cyclists—Vicente Conculini, Miguel Silio, and Yamandú Martínez—departed from their hometown of Gualeguaychú, Argentina, last August. Since taking their first pedal strokes, the friends have traversed the South and Central American continents, overcoming extreme geographical and security hurdles, including narrow escapes from a prison riot in Ecuador and a close call with a roadside bomb in Colombia. For these men, however, the real reward of the grueling expedition has been the human connections made along the highway. Conculini noted that while some might think you have to be a little crazy to embark on such an extreme adventure, the true essence of the trip lies in the journey itself rather than the final finish line.
To make their dream a reality, the friends made immense personal and financial sacrifices, with all three opting to quit their jobs and dip deeply into their personal life savings to fund the trip. Time is also of the essence for the group, particularly for Silio, whose wife granted him a strict one-year window to be away from home to complete the massive transcontinental itinerary.
Now cycling through Oklahoma, the trio is agonizingly close to their destination of Kansas City, Missouri, where they hope to catch the Argentine national team's opening matches. As the reality of completing their epic journey sets in, the cyclists admit to feeling a bittersweet sense of emptiness, reluctant for the life-changing adventure to end. To celebrate the conclusion of their historic trek, the group is inviting local Kansas City residents and cycling enthusiasts to join them on the road for the final hour of their ride into the city, with specific arrival details currently being finalized.
