California Lawmakers Review Bill to Track ICE Activity at Schools and Hospitals
California lawmakers are reviewing Senate Bill 1257, a proposal designed to increase transparency around immigration enforcement activity at sensitive locations across the state.
The legislation would require Rob Bonta and the California Attorney General’s Office to issue annual reports tracking immigration enforcement activity by ICE at places such as schools, hospitals and shelters, while keeping personal identifying information private.
Supporters of the bill say the measure would help immigrant communities better understand enforcement patterns and address fears that may prevent people from seeking medical care, education or social services.
Community advocates argue immigration concerns are already affecting daily life, including people missing medical treatments due to fears surrounding enforcement activity near clinics and hospitals.
Critics, however, have questioned how the proposal would be enforced and implemented, raising concerns about oversight and logistics.
If approved, the bill would require the Attorney General to submit a “Report of Immigration Incidents in Designated Safe Locations” to the Governor’s Office each year.
Supporters say the issue extends beyond individual communities and reflects concerns being seen throughout California.
