Backrooms Tops Weekend Box Office, Overtakes The Mandalorian and Grogu
The psychological horror film The Backrooms debuted at number one this weekend, pulling in an impressive $81.5 million in North American ticket sales during its opening window.
The movie, based on a popular internet horror story, quickly found an audience and dominated theaters with its unsettling, maze-like setting and psychological thrills.
Meanwhile, horror continued to perform well at the box office as Obsession held onto the number two spot. The film earned an additional $26.4 million, pushing its domestic total past the $100 million mark.
Falling from first to third place was The Mandalorian and Grogu, which brought in $25 million over the weekend after leading the box office previously.
In fourth place, the Michael biopic slipped one spot, earning $11.7 million in ticket sales.
Rounding out the top five was the family comedy The Breadwinner, which debuted with $7.5 million.
The weekend results mark a major shake-up at the box office, with horror films continuing to draw strong audiences and Backrooms emerging as the newest breakout hit.
