New Poll Shows Becerra and Steyer Leading California Governor’s Race Ahead of Primary
As California’s primary election approaches, a new statewide poll is offering a fresh look at where the governor’s race stands.
According to a newly released Emerson College survey, Democrat Xavier Becerra leads the field with 28% support, followed by fellow Democrat Tom Steyer at 22%. Republican Steve Hilton sits close behind in third place with 21%, while Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is polling at 12%. Former Congresswoman Katie Porter rounds out the top candidates with 5%.
The results mark the first time this year that two Democrats have emerged as frontrunners in the race.
Under California’s top-two primary system, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes on Tuesday will advance to the general election in November, regardless of party affiliation.
Meanwhile, betting markets are also signaling strong momentum for Becerra heading into the general election. Current odds place him as the favorite to win the governor’s race in November with a 68% chance of victory. Tom Steyer follows at 20%, while Steve Hilton stands at 9%.
Locally, Riverside County voters are preparing to cast ballots in several races. According to the Registrar of Voters, more than 1.46 million vote-by-mail ballots have been issued, and as of tonight, over 257,000 ballots have already been returned.
NBC Palm Springs will provide live election coverage beginning Tuesday at 8 p.m. when polls close, with updates available on-air, online, and across social media platforms.
